Bargaining bootcamp for CWA Canada leaders

Stagnant wages, heavy workloads, and lack of job security were among the topics as two dozen CWA Canada leaders and activists from locals across the country met in Ottawa on the weekend for bargaining training.

Participants discussed more aggressive strategies, including better mobilization of members, to address the challenges of making a living as a media worker.

Key problems include poor pay, long hours, temporary hires instead of full-time jobs, lack of job security, limited career opportunities, and crushing workloads.

There is also increasing anger that wages are failing to keep up with the escalating cost of living, and at the gap between management and worker compensation – especially with the paltry annual increases most media workers receive.

Sessions were led by CWA Canada President Carmel Smyth, Staff Representative Patrick Legay, and Organizer Nasr Ahmed.

Protecting quality jobs and quality journalism remains the No. 1 mission for our union.
