CWA Canada and its largest Local, the Canadian Media Guild (CMG), have made a $10,000 donation to the Indian Residential School Survivors Society (IRSSS) “in order to help the efforts at healing.”

In a letter to IRSSS Executive Director Angela White, CWA Canada President Martin O’Hanlon and CMG President Carmel Smyth said the “tragic and horrifying news that the unmarked graves of hundreds of children were found on the grounds of former Indian residential schools” was met with sadness, anger, outrage and shock among Canadians.

“Since the revelations, we have been considering what we can do to help. We cannot change the past, but we can try to heal those hurt by it — and work to ensure equality and justice moving forward.”

The two media union leaders said they hoped the donation would “aid your good work and make a difference in some lives.”
