This year’s winners of the $1,000 John Belcarz & Dan Zeidler Memorial Scholarships, along with one Honourable Mention, have been announced.

Like last year, all three are children of members of the Canadian Media Guild, CWA Canada’s largest Local (30213).

Evan Muller, of Oakville, Ont., who wrote about why the labour movement is important to Canadians, will be choosing between three universities to attend: Wilfrid Laurier, McMaster and Western. He is the son of Charles Muller, a production editor at CBC Toronto, and Shelley Poulton, a producer at CBC News Network.

Rosina Mastrangelo-Keigher, of Whitby, submitted an audio file on the topic of social justice. She has been accepted at Ontario Tech University, but has also applied to York University and the University of British Columbia. Her father is Kevin Keigher, who works in finance administration at CBC Toronto.

Receiving an honourable mention was Oliver Hopewell, of Port Moody, B.C., who also wrote about social justice. He will be attending the University of Ottawa in the fall. He is the son of Fiona Hopewell Jensen, an executive producer at CBC Vancouver.
